Magazine cover research

I had researched magazines of different genres to get ideas of fonts and ideas for my CD and posters, specifically looking at the rock ones.

Logo Attempt

 

I really like this logo as it gives and effect that someone has written or painted it themselves like lyrics which links to the music promo. However there were problems with it, when I made it on paint and then copied and pasted it onto the CD cover or CD itself there would always be a white background on the texts no matter how much I tried to cut around them on paint so because of this problem I decided to stick with the continuation of black and red in the century gothic text on PhotoDraw. This logo could however possibly be used on the advertisement.

Final CD Pack - CD Front and Back Cover

 As I liked my front and back cover attempt I decided to keep the back cover exactly the same but just change the name from 'Lucy' to 'Marilyn'. I did this because I think the dark woods on the back cover look really effective and match the mood of the song and the video. I kept the colours white and red because this is a recurring theme in my ancillary tasks and they look best against the dark background. I also have included ratings from famous magazines and websites and a barcode to make it look realistic. Finally I changed the front cover because I was now able to get a shot from the video itself to link with the video I chose one where she was looking away because most records dont need to see the band because the fans would automatically recognise it. I have again used black and red on the front in the century gothic font.

Final CD Pack - CD

 

 This is the final CD for the CD pack. I have changed the name of the band to 'Marilyn' instead of using the name of the actor we were originally going to use because then it would not seem right and instead I have used a well known famous person's name as the band name, as if it is paying homage to them. I have used the red and black text in century gothic because these are the colours used throughout. The picture on the actual CD is a screenshot from the video itself therefore they both link with each other. I created this using PhotoDraw as this was an easy platform to use and to create the CD template.

CD attempt

This is an attempt at creating the design that would be on the actual CD. To create it I used Microsoft Photodraw. Similar to the CD front and back cover I have stuck to the same colours and fonts. I have used the woods again as the background image but a different one to the CD. This again matches the song and planning we did before the video that the video would be filmed in the woods.
I have used to colours black and red because they are associated with this sort of genre of music and they are two colours that suit each other and I have been using throughout the project and the inside CD has to match the cover otherwise it would look messy. Again, like the CD front and back cover I have used century gothic font because I think it looks best for this theme and genre.

To create the front and back covers I have used Microsoft Photodraw because it has all the facilities that I needed to best create a CD. I have used an image of the person that we have asked to be in the music video and made it black and white because when I researched album covers of a similar genre there was a recurring theme of many of them having black and white covers and for the text on the front cover I have used black and red - colours typical of this genre and the font century gothic.
The front cover is simple because when I did my research rock/pop albums are simple and plain and do not have a lot happening or bright colours as that type of cover is aimed at younger audiences.
For the back cover I have used a picture we took in the woods, it is a location that we are actually planning on using in the music video itself so this means there will be a connection to the album and music video. I have again continued with the theme of black and red, and I have listed the tracks and the length of them - this is obviously needed and typical of existing albums. I have also created a review area displaying what magazines have rated the CD to make it appear real as this would sometimes appear on albums to make people want to buy them because of the high ratings.

Research of album covers

I have decided to look at album covers that are similar to the target audience of the song that our music video is based on.

Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin

This album is typical of pop/rock genre where its target audience are teenagers that are considered emo and mosher, however Lavigne's fans are mixed but the target audience is what needs to be appealed to mostly. The album itself is considered pop punk, grunge, and teen rock which is similar to her other albums.
The album uses a black and white effect to make it appear emotional and meaningful and gives the indication that the album will contain ballads and song written by her that have strong meaning to her hence the title 'Under My Skin'. Also the target audiences would wear the colour black and the tutu that she is wearing is one of her motifs and the whole look and feel of the album would appeal to the target audience including the rough writing that looks like someone has drawn it.
The red 'X' could represent being an outcast that is why it stands out to the rest of the album. This is most likely because the people that Lavigne appeals to would be considered 'the outcasts' by themselves and other people and Lavigne herself has been vocal about being an outcast because of the way she dresses and the music she listens to so she wants to make other teenagers feel accepted through her and her music.


Paramore - Riot!

Paramore's second album 'Riot!' is also considered alternative rock, pop punk and emo like Lavigne's album, so again they have a similar target audience. The albums title on the cover looks like it has been hand written to make it look authentic or like the band has written it themselves so it is personal. The title indicates that the album will contain fast, loud and hard rock music. The title has been scribbled throughout the whole background of the album in all different fonts and sizes. The band themselves have been drawn on the front cover or the affect has been used on a picture to make it appear that way which makes the whole album look like a piece of art, perhaps they are implying that their album is their piece of art.
Again it fits to the target audience because the colours used are black and white and again like Lavigne's album there is only one bit of colour and it is the title 'Riot!' which is in a bright orange clearly to stand out from the rest so that people know the name of the album, what is missing though is Paramore's name instead they have chosen a picture to show it is them, most likely because they would expect their fans to know their album if they saw it.
